Forum Software And The Pixar Pitch

In his book “To Sell Is Human”, which we mentioned in a post earlier this week, author Dan Pink describes something called the “Pixar Pitch”. He states that all Pixar movies follow the same formula:

  1. Once upon a time…
  2. Every day…
  3. One day…
  4. Because of that…
  5. Because of that…
  6. Until finally…

A Pixar movie about Ninja Post would go something like this:

Once upon a time, a young woman launched a website about healthy eating. Every day she wrote a new blog post and added new pictures. One day she noticed she was getting thousands of visitors. Because of that she felt obligated to help everyone that came to her site. Because of that she started to go crazy as it became impossible to reach every user individually. Until finally, she realized that a Ninja Post forum would give her users a place to work together and build friendships and free her to focus on her site.

As a bonus, the forum helped her generate more revenue and raise the profile of her site. Then, her Ninja Post forum magically turned into a prince and they lived happily ever after.*

Three Effective Tips To Get Users To Open A Thread On Your Forum

A well constructed thread title is important to grab users’ attention. To achieve this goal, we can examine research about email subject lines and apply it to crafting topics for forum threads.

In his book “To Sell Is Human”, author Dan Pink cites a 2011 study by CMU professors that analyzed email subject lines. He summarizes this study by saying that people open emails for either (1) extrinsic reasons (i.e., it’s work-related) or (2) intrinsic reasons (i.e., to satisfy a curiosity). The researchers concluded that subject lines should either be obviously useful or mysteriously intriguing (but not both at the same time).

Mr. Pink book goes on to say that in addition to utility and curiosity as the primary drivers for getting someone to open your email, there is a third principle: specificity. He then gives this example: the subject line “Improve your golf swing” is less effective than “4 tips to improve your golf swing this afternoon”. Obviously, the editors at Men’s Health, Glamour, and any other magazine that promise readers “X Ways To Improve Your Y in only Z days” understand this principle well.

When seeding a forum with new threads or posting a thread to liven up the conversation on an existing forum, we can apply any of the three techniques mentioned above to get users’ attention. In summary:

  • Craft a thread title that is obvisously useful.
  • Craft a thread title that is mysteriously intriguing.
  • Craft a thread title that is specific.

Using The Participation Rate To Gauge Our Progress

When we began to develop Ninja Post, one of our goals was to create forum software that improved upon traditional platforms. However, we needed a concrete way to gauge our progress. In other words, how do we know with certainty that we’re making correct design decisions?

One metric we look at is the “User Participation Rate”. A high Participation Rate is crucial because activity instills confidence that questions will receive answers in a timely fashion. This confidence is what compels users to participate. If the user doesn’t think his or her question will garner a response, he or she won’t ask it. But if the user is confident in getting a worthy reply, he or she is likely to dive in.

We measure the PR in several ways. For example:

  • What percentage of users are logged in vs. lurking?
  • What is the average number of posts per registered user?
  • What is the average time before the first reply?
  • What is the average number of replies per thread?
  • What is the average user reputation score?
  • What is the average pageview-to-post ratio for threads?

Making the Participation Rate an integral part of our feedback loop guides our development process. We live by the credo “measure, improve, measure”. We are striving toward our goal to build the fastest, most effective forum software and thanks to studying the Participation Rate so closely, we’re confident we’re on the right track.

Minimum Traffic Requirements For A Successful Forum

Yesterday we discussed the Empty Restaurant Problem. So what are the minimum traffic requirements to launch a successful forum?

We have found that about 100 visitors per day are needed from Day 1 to safely guarantee a healthy forum.

Number of Forum Visitors Likelihood of Success
0-25 Very Low
26-50 Medium
50-100 High
100+ Very High

Bear in mind the economics of user participation are brutal: the click-through rate from a site’s landing page to its forum is likely to be 10-20%. Therefore, a site would need 500-1,000 visits per day to its main site to ensure healthy activity on its forum.

The above traffic requirements are only guidelines; general rules of thumb based on our experience. Some obvious exceptions include:

  • A small community with many “power users”, each of whom posts often.
  • A company’s “Help Desk” forum to solve customers’ questions.
  • A site that covers a very specific niche for which few, if any other forums exist.

It is easy to underestimate the volume of traffic needed to launch a successful forum. For sites with very little traffic it might make sense to wait until traction improves. However, by taking steps to maximize the click-through rate and getting power users to contribute, even sites with modest traction can launch successful forums.

Forum Software And The Empty Restaurant Problem

Even the best forum software can’t create something out of nothing. A website with few visitors means a forum with even fewer visitors. This leads to the ’empty restaurant problem’, where a forum languishes without activity, and this lack of activity makes the forum even more unappealing to others. No one wants to eat in an empty restaurant, and no one feels compelled to participate in an empty forum.

To address this problem, Mike Pascucci writes that Community Moderators must take a proactive stance:

Moderation services can assist with the seeding of content and active facilitation of interactions within a community to get it on track and moving forward. While some communities may need more than others, these services can be tailored to meet any companies needs.

That being said, even the most proactive moderators in the world will have trouble launching a forum community that doesn’t have any traffic. For any site owners considering a forum, they first must ensure their main site garners enough traffic to make a forum viable. We will discuss specifics in subsequent posts.

Judging Forum Software Pound For Pound

Ninja Post forum software is fast, nimble, and powerful like Manny Pacquiao. Meanwhile, traditional forum software is bloated and slow like Butterbean. Yes, Butterbean-type software can get the job done, but not in the most elegant way. Feature bloat is ugly and an unfortunate trait inherent in most forum software packages.

We believe that, pound for pound, Ninja Post is the best forum software. Speed and power are combined within a lightweight framework. Threads update in real time, like a chat so the user does not need to constantly refresh the page to see if new items have been posted. Speed, elegance, and power trump an endless array of features. Ninja Post has the most essential features for users in your community to engage with one another.

Ninja Post Featured On StartUpLift

StartUpLift.com invites users to test and provide feedback about your site. Ninja Post used StartupLift to elicit answers to the following questions:

  • Visit http://forum.ninjapost.com. Do you understand how to register?
  • Do you feel comfortable registering for the site?
  • Would you prefer a more traditional log in/registration system even if it’s more cumbersome?
  • Are you able to compose a test thread?
  • Are you able to post a reply to a thread?
  • Please share any additional feedback/comments you might have.

The feedback we received was insightful, well detailed, and plentiful. We received 19 comments altogether, which exceeded my expectations. In recent months, most of the feedback we get has come from site admins, so it was exciting to get feedback from end users for a change.

Some users expressed concern about using Ninja Post’s current log in and registration system which relies on existing account to register for the forum. Despite a warning message at the top of the forum’s home page which tries to assuage concerns that end users might have, several users still perceived the system to be insecure or that “their info would end up everywhere.” At the same time, other users recognized the convenience of authenticating with an existing account. “I found it very 1-2-3 easy to register, I believe simple is best,” said one reviewer. Even though the feedback is mixed, it’s still very useful to know what individual users think about certain design choices.

Interview With Ninja Post Founder On AdminFusion.com

The interview covers a range of topics including the inspiration for Ninja Post, challenges inherent in launching new forums, and how Ninja Post works, among other things. In response to a question about the future of online forums. I offered:

There is a broader trend that web apps must be simple to use in order to succeed, and I think this trend should apply to forum software. There is a great opportunity for a forum solution that is simple, modern, and elegant and that’s what I’m striving to achieve with Ninja Post.
